Quick Guide to 5mm Winter Wetsuits

Not sure which 5mm wetsuit to buy? Confused as to why some are cheap and some really expensive?

Checkout our Guide on 5mm Wetsuits here which explains in detail the ins and outs of the prices differences

A 5mm winter wetsuit is an essential piece of gear for cold water activities, providing insulation and warmth to keep you comfortable in low temperatures. Whether you're into surfing, jet-skiing, or any water sport during the colder months, a 5mm wetsuit is a good choice in Northern Europe. Here's a brief guide to help you understand and choose the right 5mm winter wetsuit..... (see the bottom of the page for the rest of the article)

    1. Understanding the Thickness:

    • A 5mm wetsuit consists of neoprene material that is 5mm thick throughout the suit. This thickness provides a good balance between warmth and mobility, making it suitable for winter and cooler water conditions. Most suits will be a combination of thicknesses, e.g. 5/3mm which will mean that the 5mm bits are on the torso and the 3mm bits will be on your arms and legs

    2. Insulation and Thermal Properties:

    • The 5mm thickness provides effective insulation by trapping a thin layer of water between your body and the suit, which is then heated by your body temperature, creating a warm barrier against the cold water. All 5mm suits are Glued and Blind Stitched (GBS) which effectively makes the suits waterproof, so any water that gets in stays in and gets warm.

    3. Key Features:

    • Zip Positions: Back zips with a flush barrier behind them or chest zippers are the choices. Back zips are easier to get in to, chest zips make a better seal around your neck and provide less flushing.
    • Materials: Opt for high-quality neoprene that offers good stretch, durability, and is designed to repel water and wind.

    4. Choosing the Right Fit:

    • The wetsuit should fit snugly to provide efficient thermal insulation. Avoid excessive looseness or tightness that may hamper movement or compromise warmth.
    • Pay attention to size charts provided by the manufacturer to find the most suitable size based on your height, weight, and body measurements. Never guess your size when buying a wetsuit and always go up if in between sizes

    5. Additional Tips:

    • Consider layering with thermal rash guards or neoprene hoods, gloves, and booties for added warmth in extreme cold conditions.
    • Check the water temperature of your intended activity and adjust the layering accordingly. For colder water, you may need more layering.

Remember to choose a 5mm winter wetsuit that suits your specific water activity, provides the right amount of insulation, and ensures a comfortable and enjoyable experience even in chilly waters.
