And All The Family
Do your kids love being in the water? A summer beach holiday is so much more fun when you can all get involved in water sports activities. It's a great way for your children to build water confidence and fitness while spending quality time together as a family. But what are the best kids' water sports that all the family can enjoy?
Flying On Water
Once your kids have mastered swimming and are comfortable in the water, surfing is an amazing experience that can feel as if you're actually flying on water. Some surf schools take children from as young as 4 but surfing is a sport you can enjoy at any age. There's nothing quite as exhilarating as catching a wave but there are other board related activities that your kids may prefer like bodyboarding and kitesurfing which are slightly easier to master. Best of all, surfing really is a family sport where everyone can ride at their own pace.
We Are Sailing
Whether your kids have a real spirit of adventure or they'd prefer to be on the water than in it, sailing could be the water sport they'll love. Dinghy sailing is a fun and cost-effective way to see if they'll enjoy sailing before progressing to other types of boat.
If they enjoy it and want to progress, then try the Youth Sailing Scheme run by the Royal Yachting Association – adult courses are also available if you want to make this a family pursuit. Just remember that good quality kids sailing clothing is essential for safety and comfort on board and that your kids will need to be able to swim despite the use of safety equipment.
Pick up your Paddles
Paddle sports like kayaking and canoeing are a fantastic opportunity to explore quiet stretches of riverside before progressing to faster flowing water. Kitting your children out in a kids wetsuits is a smart move for those times you do find yourself in the water! This is another affordable water sport and there's even an awards scheme – Paddlepower, to keep kids and young adults motivated.
Under the Waves
There's nothing quite like the unique experience of viewing life under the waves. If your child was inspired by Blue Planet and loves visiting the aquarium, why not give them the opportunity to view life underwater up close? Start with snorkelling before working up to a PADI course that combines fun with some valuable life skills.
Be Apart Of A Team
If your kids love team sports, then they'll probably enjoy the fast-moving sport of water polo. This really is the perfect water sport for a family who loves to play together as all ages can join in. It's incredibly easy to start playing – all you need is a ball and a net – and you'll soon be hooked. You'll enjoy a total body workout and learn some valuable social skills that only come from playing in a team.
